The DOs and DON’TS of Using CTA’s on Your Website

It’s important to remember that website’s main objective is to turn visitors that land on your site into real, paying dream customers.

For this to happen, you have to show them how to make the next move, whether it is to buy a product from your store or to reach out to you to book a service.

Giving your website visitors a clear way of taking action with your brand is done through CTA buttons and sections. These gems should be built with conversion in mind. So that means there are both right and wrong ways of implementing them into your site’s design.

Let’s look at the dos and don’t’s of CTAs so you’ll know how to take advantage of their awesomeness.

But first…

What the heck is a CTA?

A CTA (call-to-action) on a website is an engaging element (buttons, text, sections, or images) that directs a visitor to making a specific action.

For example, if you want someone to book a consultation call with you on your website, you may have strategically placed buttons with “Book a Discovery Call” (the call) displayed on your site. This element will link directly to your contact or booking page for the visitor to reach out to you (the action).

Now, let’s get into the do’s and don’ts of this getting this element to help create conversions for your business!

Do promote your CTA regularly.

Where you want someone to engage with you on your website, a CTA should be in that section.

Whether it’s a button that pushes the visitor to a contact page to reach out to you or a section designed to promote your shiny new lead magnet, make sure you’re leading the visitor to that action.

Do keep your CTA short and sweet.

CTAs like “Learn more” , “Sign up now”, and “Buy Now” are clear, simple, and tells your website visitor exactly what will happen after they engage with that element.

Do have a CTA on each of your website’s pages.

Not only does this help to break up your page’s content but it keeps button or section that leads the visitor to a core offer or page on your website highly visible.

Don’t use CTAs to link back to your homepage.

You want to make sure that visitors continue their journey through your website to learn more about how you can help them and to eventually reach out to you.

Leading them back to square one (aka your homepage) leaves your visitor feeling lost which may make them want to leave your website with the quickness.

Don’t use generic and boring CTAs.

“Submit” and “Shop” are blah AF.

“Download Your Copy” or “Shop the Collection” is much more valuable and appealing to the visitor.

Here are some examples of engaging call-to-action copy:

  • Get Your Free Download/eBook
  • Book a Discovery Call
  • Get Started Today
  • Yes, I’m Ready!
  • Let’s Chat!
  • Get Your Demo

Here are some tips to spice up your CTAs:

  • Write your CTA copy in the first person. Ex: Yes, I’m Ready!
  • Use all caps or bolded text strategically in larger CTAs. Add them to action words that project positivity.
  • Create urgency by using words like now and today. Ex: “Download Your Copy Now” or “Purchase Today”

Don’t use colors that end up hiding your CTAs.

Incorporating colors that both compliment your website’s look and feel but allows your CTAs to pop will keep them noticeable to for your website visitors.

Using CTA’s effectively will help you to build conversions from your website. Use the tips and tricks in this article to create or revamp your own!
